As a family run business, we understand the importance of giving back to our local community. Over the years we have achieved this in lots of different ways and are always keen to help where we can.
We are proud to have sponsored many local sports teams including Hailsham Town Youth FC, Pevensey Cricket Club, Hailsham Cricket Club, Hellingly RFC and Herstmonceux Bowls Club.
We are also proud to be supporters of St Wilfrid’s Hospice in Eastbourne. We have donated over £37,000 to the Hospice through our Papers for St Wilfrid’s scheme which was set up back in 2016. We also have a skip at their Eastbourne Donation and Furniture centre where people can still donate their cardboard to raise money for the Hospice.
In 2018, we donated a car to help with their home visits and have partaken in a selection of their sponsored events including their annual Pancake Race, Kapow! and their Rainbow Run!
We were privileged to be asked to attend the Hospice when HRH Queen Camilla visited during their 40th anniversary celebrations and Lisa was honoured to meet Her Majesty the Queen during this visit.
We are able to help our local community through skip hire, donating skips to community events and good causes including to 2nd Hailsham Scouts, Hailsham Cricket Club, The Phoenix Academy, The Camper Marmalade Festival, Eastbourne Relay for Life and Lammas Festival.
We have run, walked (and at some points almost crawled) two half marathons to raise money for local causes. On the first Eastbourne half marathon we had a wooden skip built which the team took in turns to carry around the 13.1 miles!
We are also proud to have been able to raise hundreds of pounds for Macmillan, Children In Need and Jeans for Genes through our many office bake sales and fundraising. On one Sport Relief Day, we bought an exercise bike into the office and took turns to keep cycling all day!
In 2021, Haulaway celebrated 30 years of trading. To celebrate, we drove all our trucks through Hailsham town sounding our horns, it was a real spectacle! We also donated a defibrillator to the town; this was presented to the mayor at the towns first Hailsham Live festival!
Our chosen charity for 2023 was You Raise Me Up, a charity based in Polegate supporting families who have lost a young adult between the ages of 16 and 25. For the whole year we donated £1.00 for every skip that we delivered and with the help of all our customers we raised thousands of pounds for this very worthy cause!
In 2023 we raised £11,559 for Raise Me Up.
As well as supporting local charities and clubs, we are also keen to promote local businesses and organisations. Haulaway is a member of the Hailsham Chamber of Commerce and ThebestofEastbourne.
We couldn’t have done any of the above without the participation and support of all our colleagues and customers, we are so grateful to feel a part of such a thriving community.
PAPERS FOR ST WILFRID’S
Papers for St. Wilfrid’s was a kerbside recycling service in Hailsham that ran for 6 years whereby we supplied a red box to residents in Hailsham and Hellingly and collected all their unwanted papers and cardboard. The support from our local community for this service was epic and we had over 2,500 red boxes out, collecting around 5 tonnes of papers and cardboard every week.
The scheme started when Haulaway celebrated 25 years of trading, we wanted to give something back to our community and came up with this scheme to turn recycling into funds for a great local cause.
RAISING MONEY WITH RECYCLING
In total, over £40,000 was raised from Papers for St Wilfrid’s, we could never have predicted the overwhelming success of this project and are so thankful to everyone who filled their red boxes each week.
Although we don’t run this service anymore, you are still able to support St Wilfrid’s through the recycling of your unwanted papers and cardboard. We have an enclosed skip at the St Wilfrid’s Donation and Furniture Centre in Eastbourne which is available for anyone to put their unwanted papers and cardboard in. This is emptied regularly with the proceeds from the recycling going to St Wilfrid’s Hospice. If you would like any more information on this, please contact our office.
WHY ST WILFRID’S?
St Wilfrid’s Hospice is a charity that touches the lives of many people, providing specialist care for people with many progressive and advanced illnesses. Therefore, being able to contribute to the £15,000 per day needed to run the Hospice is a cause close to ours, and we are sure, many other people’s hearts.
In 2021, it was Haulaway’s 30th Birthday and so, with the ongoing support and involvement from Hailsham residents, our aim was to reach an incredible £30,000 having been donated to St Wilfrid’s by the end of the year. We are pleased to confirm that we exceeded this fantastic amount, which makes us feel extremely proud.
